A missing difference bounding box can hide a changed color pixel. In the saved Pillow 9.4.0 test below, ImageChops.difference(a,b).getbbox() returned None, although one pixel changed. The alpha difference was zero everywhere.
These invented 4×3 PNGs are enlarged without smoothing. At coordinate (2,1), red changes from 20 to 220; alpha stays 255. Coordinates start at (0,0) in the top left.
Choose a view. Each channel is shown as an opaque grayscale image: black means zero difference; lighter means a larger difference. This browser visualization is separate from the saved Pillow run.
Checking the embedded image bytes…
| Check in Pillow 9.4.0 | Result |
|---|---|
| RGBA difference getbbox() | None |
| RGB difference getbbox() | (2, 1, 3, 2) |
| Red difference getbbox() | (2, 1, 3, 2) |
| Decoded RGBA bytes equal | False |
| Equal-image control getbbox() | None |
from PIL import Image, ImageChops
a = Image.new("RGBA", (4, 3), (20, 40, 60, 255))
b = a.copy()
b.putpixel((2, 1), (220, 40, 60, 255))
d = ImageChops.difference(a, b)
print(d.getbbox()) # None on tested 9.4.0
print(d.convert("RGB").getbbox()) # (2, 1, 3, 2)
print(a.tobytes() == b.tobytes()) # FalseFor exact decoded equality, compare dimensions, mode and all required channels. Converting the difference to RGB alone ignores alpha changes. Equal decoded pixels also do not establish identical file bytes, metadata or animation.
Current Pillow documentation describes alpha_only=True and an option to consider all channels. The tested 9.4.0 signature is only (self); that keyword cannot be assumed available in older versions. Current-version execution was not tested.
The earlier local test used Python 3.11.2 and Pillow 9.4.0. Independent PNG chunk/CRC and scanline decoding reconstructed every channel; Chromium also decoded both files and found only one changed channel value. No new native run or image pair was added for this replay. The replay compares its own decoded values with the saved values before drawing the channel view.
This tests one opaque, single-frame RGBA pair. It does not test perceptual similarity, color management, orientation, other image modes, a duplicate finder or customer files. No operator benefit, paid service or revenue is claimed. The page requests no images and makes no automatic network requests.
